The Indian Railways has introduced a significant change to the Tatkal ticket booking process, which will come into effect starting July 1, 2025. These changes aim to streamline the booking process, enhance security, and reduce misuse by unauthorized agents and touts. Here’s everything you need to know.
Key Changes in Tatkal Booking Rules
Aadhaar Authentication Becomes Mandatory for Online Tatkal Bookings
Starting from July 1, 2025, all users booking Tatkal tickets via the IRCTC website or mobile app must be Aadhaar-authenticated. This means only users whose Aadhaar is linked and verified will be allowed to make Tatkal bookings online.
Additionally, from July 15, 2025, an OTP-based Aadhaar verification will be implemented, adding another layer of security. This move is expected to reduce fake or bot-based bookings and ensure genuine travelers get priority.
New Rules for Non-Aadhaar Users – PRS Counters and Agents
For passengers who do not wish to link their Aadhaar, bookings can still be made through PRS counters or authorized booking agents (YTSK). However, beginning July 15, 2025, even these bookings will require OTP verification sent to the mobile number of the person for whom the ticket is being booked.
This step is aimed at curbing fraudulent bookings made without the knowledge or consent of the passenger.
Restrictions on Travel Agents for Tatkal Bookings
To further prevent misuse, authorized travel agents will no longer be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of booking windows:
AC Classes: Agents can book only after 10:30 AM (Booking opens at 10:00 AM)
Non-AC Classes: Agents can book only after 11:30 AM (Booking opens at 11:00 AM)
This rule is designed to give individual passengers a fair chance to secure Tatkal tickets without facing competition from bulk-booking agents in the critical first few minutes.
Why These Changes Matter
The Tatkal system is meant to help passengers who need to travel on short notice. However, over the years, the system has often been manipulated by unauthorized agents using scripts and bots, leaving genuine travelers frustrated.
By introducing Aadhaar verification, mobile OTP checks, and agent booking restrictions, Indian Railways hopes to bring more transparency and fairness into the system.
Takeaway for Travelers
Link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account before July 1, 2025, if you plan to book Tatkal tickets online.
Ensure your mobile number is updated and accessible for OTP-based verification.
Be aware of new timing restrictions if you’re booking through agents.
Indian Railways’ Move Towards a More Secure and Transparent Tatkal System
These changes reflect the Railways’ ongoing efforts to make the ticketing system more user-friendly, secure, and accessible to genuine passengers. While some may face initial inconvenience during the transition, the long-term benefits of reducing fraud and making the system more equitable are likely to be welcomed by regular travelers.
